Guest Post by Author Jamie White…

It is always a pleasure to help out a fellow author and today, in honor of her new release Learning Me, I have a guest post by Jamie White.

Learning Me Cover AMAZONTo be able to accurately express what our characters think, feel, desire is just one of many tasks an author performs to create a captivating story. Sometimes characters just won’t leave us alone until they get their point across. This is the case of Courtney, White’s protagonist in Learning Me. Below Courtney shares the internal struggle she faces trying to prove to her parents how important acting is to her.

Courtney: I’ve been fighting them my whole life. I love acting more than anything else, but my parents hate it, so you can just guess how great that’s gone for me. I had to beg for years to be able to just do some school plays, and it makes no sense. Can’t they at least pretend like they care about how much this means to me? It’s like we aren’t even speaking the same language anymore.

I’ve tried to explain to them why I want this so much, but they don’t care. If anything, it just makes them weirder. Now, I have to tell them I want to audition for something big. I know this is going to go over so bad, and I’m considering not even bothering. The only problem is, my boyfriend and my best friends won’t let me. In fact, Matthew (my friend) has threatened to drag me there himself if I don’t. So why can’t I just tell them?

Oh, right. They’ll melt down if I do. Come to think of it, I don’t understand why not. Sure, they’ve tried to explain before. They gave me all kinds of lame non-answers the few times I’ve brought it up, but they’re suddenly not good enough anymore.

There’s something going on, and I need to find out what. I’m afraid that if I don’t try, I’ll be missing something big. Something that could change my whole life.

Learning Me: Courtney’s parents hate the one thing she loves to do most in the world, and she doesn’t understand why. When a new opportunity presents itself, their reaction stirs long-repressed memories that bring up questions she never considered–questions that will change everything.
